Language and literacy development are closely related.  Gaining language skills, both talking and listening, supports reading and writing and vice versa.  In addition, children’s language skills and literacy development allow them to explore and learn content.  As an early educator, you play a pivotal role in helping the children in your setting develop a strong foundation of language and literacy.  They will use these skills to communicate with you and the other children, to get involved in play, to learn to love books and learn from them, and to express their feelings and ideas in spoken and written forms.  This course by Jessica Cain looks at the following ways in which early educators can foster language and literacy development in children:

  • Understanding the Language and Literacy Development of Infants, Toddlers, and Preschoolers
  • Creating a language and literacy learning environment
  • Supporting children’s oral language development
  • Fostering children’s reading and writing development.
