Autism 101 is a comprehensive, foundational course designed to help early childhood educators better understand autism and foster inclusive, supportive classroom environments. It highlights that autism is a neurodevelopmental difference, and that each child’s experience is unique, and focuses on strengths-based, respectful approaches for supporting Autistic children effectively in early learning settings.  

Throughout this course, you will examine characteristics of autism, address and correct prevalent myths, and explore how autism can influence communication, social interaction, behavior, sensory processing, and overall development. You will also learn practical strategies for designing autism-friendly classrooms, such as optimizing the physical environment, using visual supports, incorporating personal space tools, establishing calm-down areas, and implementing predictable routines.

This training also covers essential safety considerations, including wandering and elopement, and clarifies the educator’s responsibilities in safety planning. Participants will gain guidance on sharing concerns with families and navigating challenging conversations with professionalism and empathy.

By the end of Autism 101, you will be empowered to support Autistic children more confidently, build strong partnerships with families, and create safe, inclusive, responsive early childhood environments.

Course Objectives:

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Define Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) using current, strengths-based language appropriate for early childhood settings, and identify common signs and characteristics of autism.
  • Describe practical classroom strategies that support Autistic children, including environmental setup, visual supports, routines, and calming spaces.
  • Recognize safety considerations, including wandering and elopement, and identify strategies to reduce risk in collaboration with families.
  • Demonstrate appropriate professional boundaries by understanding the educator’s role in observation, documentation, and communication.
  • Build collaborative partnerships with families to support Autistic children across home and early learning environments.
