Hello, !

This 3-hour course aims to explore the many aspects of keeping children safe. It provides important information on the significance of supervision, identifies silent hazards that can be life-threatening, and offers strategies to eliminate these risks. Additionally, the course discusses new recommendations for safe sleep and outlines how to monitor and manage safety within the program. At the end of each module, a quiz will assess your knowledge as you advance through the material.

Learning Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this course, early childhood educators will be able to:

  • Define active supervision and explain its significance in ensuring the safety and well-being of young children in early learning environments.
  • Identify and implement the six key strategies of active supervision (setting up the environment, positioning staff, scanning and counting, listening, anticipating behavior, engaging and redirecting) to prevent accidents and support positive interactions.
  • Apply and maintain health and safety practices tailored to the developmental needs of infants, toddlers, and preschoolers across daily routines, play, and mealtimes.
  • Recognize and comply with state and federal regulations regarding child safety, supervision, staff-to-child ratios, and authorized pick-up procedures.
  • Design and maintain safe indoor and outdoor learning environments by proactively assessing for hazards and adapting spaces to meet children’s developmental needs.
  • Educate children on essential safety content, including pedestrian, fire, water, and poison safety, and empower them with practical skills for real-life situations.
  • Demonstrate effective prevention and response strategies for common early childhood hazards, such as choking, suffocation, strangulation, and exposure to toxins (lead, carbon monoxide).
  • Implement safe sleep practices and SIDS prevention guidelines for infants, and ensure compliance with current regulations and best practices.
  • Develop, communicate, and routinely practice comprehensive emergency and evacuation plans to respond effectively to a variety of potential incidents in early childhood settings.

This course prepares educators to create, maintain, and teach within safe, nurturing environments that foster healthy development and lifelong safety awareness for young children.
